Congratulations to the young ladies of Lissey’s Place Explorer Post for completing their first level training in basic life and social skills. LaTanya Gittens, LFL/Exploring youth worker, did an exceptional job with providing a well thought out and structured program. I had a wonderful opportunity to attend an observation led by LaTanya. The session centered on the importance of “Building Self-Esteem and Self-Reliance.” The open discussion on building self-esteem was both heartfelt and heartwarming. The director of the center sat in on the session and shared her own personal struggles as a young woman.
One of the other sessions I attended was a “Goal Setting” session. The young ladies participated in a form of art therapy by constructing a large size vision board. The vision board depicted their very own mission statement to keep them on track with their goals. I was truly amazed at the enthusiasm and the artistic approach as each young lady thumbed through various magazines, newspaper articles, famous quotes and poems to affix to their board. Each board spoke volumes about where they see themselves in the next 2-3 years educationally, spiritually, financially and in their chosen career field.
The first phase ended with a celebratory ceremony where each participant was given a certificate of completion for their participation. The next program is slated to start in the fall. We’re looking for positive female mentors and leaders to come in and share their career profession with these young ladies.
